Parad Gandhak Bhasm (Mercury-Sulfur Ash) in Ayurveda

Parad Gandhak Bhasm (पारद गंधक भस्म) is an important Ayurvedic preparation made from Parad (Mercury) and Gandhak (Sulfur). It is extensively used in Rasashastra (Ayurvedic alchemy) due to its potent medicinal properties. This bhasma is formed through the Kupi Pakwa Vidhi or other alchemical processes to detoxify mercury and sulfur, making them safe for medicinal use.

Preparation Process of Parad Gandhak Bhasm

The process involves multiple steps to purify and stabilize the mercury-sulfur combination.

Ingredients:

  1. Shuddha Parad (Purified Mercury)
  2. Shuddha Gandhak (Purified Sulfur)
  3. Kachcha Karpura (Raw Camphor) – Optional
  4. Kumari Swarasa (Aloe Vera Juice) – Used in some variations

Procedure:

  1. Purification of Mercury & Sulfur

    • Mercury undergoes Asht Sanskar (8 purification steps).
    • Sulfur is purified using herbal decoctions.
  2. Kharaliya Rasayana (Trituration Process)

    • Mercury and sulfur are triturated together in a Khalva Yantra (stone mortar and pestle).
    • The mixture turns into a black, fine-textured amalgam.
  3. Bhavana Process (Levigation with Herbs)

    • Some formulations involve levigation with Aloe Vera juice or other plant extracts.
    • This enhances medicinal potency and makes the formulation smoother.
  4. Kupi Pakwa Vidhi (Glass Bottle Sublimation Process)

    • The prepared mixture is placed in a kupi (glass bottle) and gradually heated in a Valukayantra (sand bath furnace).
    • The heat is carefully controlled in three stages:
      • Mridu Agni (low flame)
      • Madhyam Agni (medium flame)
      • Tivra Agni (high flame)
    • The vapors condense and deposit at the neck of the bottle, forming Parad Gandhak Bhasm.
